« on: May 26, 2012, 07:56:44 am »
I traveled down to Aberdeen about three weeks ago, I had my car with me so I caught the ferry..

Paisley.. Thats where I met my daughter at her house, she had to put up wae her auld man for three weeks..

Paid a quick visit to RSPB Lochwinnoch, there I caught sight of the Tree-creeper, and others..

Tree - creeper..

The next day it was down to Dumfries & Galloway..

I had to do a talk at the Sanquhar camera club, not have giving a talk before, it was quite nerve racking.. But Andy my mate told me it would be fine..

So my host showed me about the area, he took me to Wanlockhead then Leadhills, there I took these..

Then Roe-deer up high in the hill..

The next day Andy got permission to take Red - squirrils pictures..

Then this Nuthatch got in on the act..

Then it was off to the Kite trail, it is on Galloway..

Then it was back to Sanquhar for the.... [gulp].... talk, but before we went, Andy took me up the. what must be the highest hill in Scotland, there we watched Red-grouse, then we went back down the hill and got this, its a female Perigrine at a distance..

Then it was time for the talk and slideshow. the people really liked my slideshow on the Auroras, and the Sei-whale feeding in Firth Voe and in fact they enjoyed all of it, and going by the upplause I got I may... [if i'm spared]... go back next year..

Part two to follow..

Animals / Risso's Dolphins. 5th.March 2012
« on: March 06, 2012, 07:47:52 am »
I heard that there was three Risso's at Catfirth, I heard late on Sun.the 4th.

The next morning I drove south to Catfirth, when I arrived I met with Austin Taylor.. He was just leaving..

So I set up my camera and long lens on my tripod..

The animals were swimming back and forward in front of me..

Two always kept close, but the other one kept its distance.. Then the one that kept its distance started to slapping its tail a few times
then threw itself clear of the water for about six times, I don't know if it was happy or showing off, but it was amazing watching it..

I used up all my space on my flash/card.. So I made my way home, then i remembered that I had my sony-nex with my 400mm lens attached, but by this time I was nearly home..

Photos of the Risso's..

Animals / Mountain Hare [winter coat]
« on: March 01, 2012, 09:35:26 am »
I was out again on the moor yesterday..

I spotted this Mountain hare up on the moor..

So I parked the car, got my camera and trecked up the hill into the moor, I was circling the Hare when I spotted another one only about 20 feet from me, I managed to get two pictures of it, one pic. was it trying to hide, the other one was after it stopped running..

The other pictures was of the other Hare. I'll show the first Hare first, then the other one..

Trying to hide..

After it ran, it stopped for a look..

The other Hare..

The Tavern / Sei-whale September 2011.
« on: February 18, 2012, 09:28:36 am »
I've been asked to write a blog about the Sei-whale
seen in September 2011..

In the morning of the sighting I got a phone call from
one of my sons, he said there was a Basking Shark in
Firth Voe..

I made my way to Firth Voe, and I seen it right away, at
first I thought it was a Minke Whale, I took a few pictures of it,
then went back to my house to report it on twitter and on
Hugh Harrops facebook page..

Unfortunatly Hugh Harrop was over in Canada on holiday..

I then made my way back to Firth Voe and seen it close in to the

So I attached my camera to my tripod and made my way down to the shore,
taking pictures of it on the way down..

The Sei-Whale was feeding in a clockward direction, often lunging on its side.

Then it was feeding upright.

It was very fast in the water but it never breached or showed its tail fluke.

I was joined by Austin Taylor another photographer. He got lots of pictures also..

Later on I edited my pictures and copied them onto a memory-stick, I took them
to Neil Anderson and gave him the memory-stick, later on I got a phone call from
Neil he was certain the whale was not a Minke but a Sei-Whale he also told me that the Whale
had a harpoon stuck in its head [which I missed]

The last reported sighting in Shetland waters was I believe 1993, and as far as I know its
only the third sighting seen..

To go back to the start of this blog. There was a Basking Shark in the Voe at the same time
as the Sei-Whale..

Other pictures of the Whale..

The person who asked me to write this blog was Mark Chapman the recorder for the RSPB..

Other / Northern Lights..

The News / Another whale in firth voe..
« on: December 02, 2011, 09:49:06 am »
While I was watching the R.L.Buzzard this afternoon I got a call from Mark Chapman.. he saw possibly a Minke or a Sei Whale in firth voe, it almost cleared the water when it jumped, Mark told me it had very long fins, and it was traveling quite fast.. if it is the Sei Whale, then it might stay in the Voe for a few days, Mark & I will be watching tomorrow.. Mark did say that he did'nt think it was a Humpback Whale....

The statement above was copied & pasted by me today. just thought you may be interested..

A HD video of a drive along Nibon.. Nibon is very wild and ancient.. lots of ruined croft houses, if you pause the video...... It must be the worst road in Shetland, with blind summits and scary bends.. and its single tracked...

The video.. [please allow time for the video to buffer]
