Theres been a really big gale blowing on shetland for a few days now..

Quote from Fiona.. Thank God I'm not on the boat! Gales -yuck, bad enough here without being on the high seas! It left Shet 17:30 Mon, Abdn harbour closed so diverting to Rosyth, arr 20:30. 27hrs, poor souls!!

And its still blowing..

I was out at the south end o the island looking for birdies. but thought you might like to see the waves at Grutness [near sumburgh head]

Sea salt was everywhere, but my camera & lens was ok.. it was covered by goretex waterproof...

My pictures of the [rubythroat] are certainly not as good as I would like, it kept a fair distance from all the twitchers.

On Thursday we had four birders from Bristal & yesterday we had a few from Yorkshire. glad to say they all seen the Mega rare bird..

Yesterday was terrible weather-wise. wet cold & very windy, at one stage I was nearly blown away, it was so strong..

So.. The Siberian Rubythroat is still at Gulberwick..

My poor pictures of it..

This week I went down to the south end of Shetland mainland. A Isabelline Shrike.. has been there for a few days, as i'm not to sure of the area it is in , so I phoned Hugh Harrop, he gave me excelent directions..

It was at the bottom of the field, fence hopping, it eventully made it up to where I was..

Anne, I was surprized, wheatears normally don't let you get close to them, but this one did..

I'll show a few pics of the Great Skua, taken within the last seven days, note the weather. it was lovely, unlike yesterday, it was horrible..

Great Skua.

Yesterday.. A lady from Rhode Island USA got a lift in my car from Sumburgh lighthouse to Sumburgh hotel, she just escaped a heavy shower, I seen it coming over the Atlantic and stopped for her, she was finding it hard to walk with the stong gale o wind, and we shared this lovely bird between us..

Wheatear. [ it was very tame]
